MY REVIEW:

To me nothing says "Children's Movie" quite like a Disney movie, even more so a Disney Classic. Yes, I think The Little Mermaid belongs among all other Disney Classic movies.  She may not have started out as a two legged princess but by the end of the movie true love prevails (as it often times does) and she is a beautiful princess walking with humans.
The Little Mermaid is my husband's favorite Disney movie and I'm so happy that he is able to share his love for the movie with our children.  When we sat down to watch it there was quiet in my home, to many that may not be a big deal but in a house of six it is an oddity. Any movie that can quiet my kids is a winner in my book.
My personal favorite in this movie is the independence that it's teaching, not everyone may appreciate that it's showing children to stand up to their parents and pave their own way, but rest assured a lot of children don't actually get the message until later on.  Yes, it's true Ariel stands up to her father's instruction and goes against him to seek out her true love.  Once in awhile we, as parents, need to learn the valuable lesson that King Triton learned in the end.  We can stand against our children because "we know what's right and that's all there is to it" but we have to give in once in awhile.  We don't always know what's best for our children, we may like to and wish we did but we don't.  We don't want them to make the same mistakes we did, or any for that matter. But that's how they learn, that's how they grow. It's how we learn and grow as well.  We need to accept that sometimes our children are going to want and going to do things that we may not like, or wish they didn't do, but in the end this is their life and we've guided them to be the people they are.  We need to trust that when the time come for them to stand on their own two feet that we have given them the ground work to be able to handle it.  Letting go can be hard, we shouldn't make it any harder.
I love Ariel.  She's such a spirited young...fish...person...both?!  She's amazing, no matter what comes her way she doesn't lose her spirit, her love and desire to learn things, to see new things, to enjoy life.  No matter what or who tries to get her down she's a wonderful little trooper, she does what she believes is right and she follows her own path.  Not that the path her father had set out for her is wrong but because her path is the right one for her.  I admire that Disney had made such a strong willed character and someone that children can learn such a great lesson from.
I do not find there to be anything inappropriate about the little Mermaid, although Ursula scares my children and they could do without her (chuckles a little bit).  Ariel's a beautiful young mer-person and I really like the character.  I love watching Walt Disney movies with my children and I'm so happy that The Little Mermaid has made it to "Diamond Edition" status and is now available on BluRay and my children's favorite DIGITAL COPY.  Ariel, Flounder and Sebastian can come everywhere with us now, like on my laptop or the iPad or iPod, yes, we can never get too much Ariel.

If you're looking to start a new tradition with your children, I suggest you go out and grab this wonderful movie (that you likely enjoyed yourself as a child) and sit down with some popcorn and enjoy.  You can never go wrong with a Disney Princess, even boys can find something to like about this movie, like handsome Prince Eric!!

I give this movie 12 out of 12 thumbs up!
